Photos have been added to two albums in the Tresco section of the Photo Gallery. The first is a selection of scenes from the north-east of the island and features closeups of the old Blockhouse together with surrounding seascapes. The second album shows figureheads in the Valhalla Museum in the Abbey Garden grounds.

The Blockhouse, Tresco
Maintained by English heritage, the granite remains of the ‘Blockhouse’ are situated on high ground on the southern corner of Old Grimsby harbour and face across the bay affording panoramic views towards the island of St. Helens.
A prominent structure constructed around 1554, part of the gun platform and living quaters of the small Royalist garrison once housed there in the unsuccessful defence of Tresco during the Civil War is all that remains today.

Valhalla Museum
Situated in the grounds of Tresco Abbey Gardens, the Valhalla Museum is home to a unique collection of Ships’ figureheads.
Housed in a verandha-style granite building, many of the exhibits have been retrieved from vessels that came to grief in Scillonian waters. With fine examples of life-like, brightly painted wood carvings, the figureheads and sternboard name plaques serve as a reminder of the romantic days of sail.
